Meliá Hotels International is entering the Maldives market with the launch of Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives, a five-star all-inclusive resort scheduled to open in January 2026. The property represents the Spanish hospitality group’s first venture in the island nation and advances its expansion strategy across premier leisure destinations.
Situated in South Ari Atoll, the resort will be accessible via a 30-minute seaplane journey from Malé International Airport. The location places guests within the South Ari Marine Protected Area, recognized for consistent whale shark and manta ray encounters throughout the year. The resort will offer marine activities including snorkeling, diving, paddleboarding, and kayaking for guests interested in exploring the surrounding waters.
The property will comprise 100 oceanfront villas across three categories. Water Villas will be positioned above the lagoon, providing direct water access and horizon views. Sunset Suite Villas will feature private swimming pools and western exposure for sunset viewing. Beach Villas will offer immediate shoreline access with accommodations opening directly onto the sand.
Dining facilities will include four restaurants and bars serving Mediterranean and international menus. The resort will maintain two infinity pools and a spa facility offering body treatments, wellness programs, and amenities such as sauna and steam rooms. Entertainment programming will encompass live music performances, outdoor cinema screenings, culinary instruction, and age-appropriate activities for children.

Mr. Gabriel Escarrer, Chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels International, characterized the Maldives entry as aligned with the company’s objective to establish presence in exclusive markets while delivering the hospitality standards associated with the Meliá brand.
The opening positions Meliá within the competitive Maldivian luxury resort sector alongside established international hospitality operators including Marriott, Hilton, and Accor. The property joins Meliá’s Indian Ocean portfolio, which currently includes resorts in Zanzibar, Seychelles, and Mauritius, strengthening the group’s regional footprint in premium leisure travel markets. The development also reflects Meliá’s stated commitment to incorporating sustainable operational practices into its properties.
