The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives) welcomes and supports this major milestone achieved by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), as the nation prepares to unveil the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA).
The terminal will officially open tonight, 26 July 2025, in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence. The ceremony will be officiated by H.E. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu as Chief Guest, with approximately 6,000 attendees. The programme includes the formal inauguration of the new VIA Passenger Terminal, followed by a drone and light show, and a grand fireworks display. To encourage public participation, eight viewing platforms equipped with lighting, staging and live broadcast facilities will be set up across Malé, Hulhumalé, Villimalé, and Addu Feydhoo, alongside cultural performances and food offerings.
Covering 72,000 square metres and designed to accommodate 7.5 million passengers annually, the new terminal represents a transformative boost for Maldivian tourism. Features include 12 passenger boarding bridges, 47 traditional and 24 dedicated seaplane check-in counters, an advanced baggage handling system with real-time tracking, e-gates for immigration, as well as 41 elevators, 14 escalators and 4 travellators for improved passenger flow. The interior design incorporates patterns inspired by Maldivian natural landscapes, adding a distinctive cultural touch.
The development aligns with MMPRC’s strategic vision to support tourism growth and diversify into key segments such as multi-generational travel, MICE tourism, adventure and wellness. With increased capacity and enhanced operational efficiency, the new terminal will better accommodate rising visitor demand in the years ahead.
Commenting on the occasion, CEO & MD of MMPRC, Mr. Ibrahim Shiuree, stated: “The inauguration of the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport marks a pivotal moment for Maldivian tourism. This state-of-the-art facility significantly enhances the traveller experience and directly supports our strategic goals of diversifying tourism offerings and reaching new markets.
