350.org is a global campaign founded by Mr. Bill McKibben, American environmentalist and author, is dedicated to building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis. The mission of the 350 movement is to inspire the world to create a new sense of urgency and rise to the challenge of the climate crisis. The focus is on 350 parts per million – the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in the atmosphere.
Divers Association of Maldives teamed up with the 350 movement to create a highly publicised, grassroots movement in the Maldives, aiming to educate the public and leaders on the socio-economic impact of climate change through creative means.
Divers Association Maldives recently organised a 24-hour underwater dive, in the lagoon just outside of Malé, in front of the President’s Office. More than 150 scuba divers took part in this event including local divers and foreign expatriate divers.
The event showcased different activities at a depth of around 03 meters. An underwater protest to highlight Maldives’ vulnerability to climate change, a Bodu Beru show (traditional Maldivian drums) and a bike ride are among some of the activities took place during the dive marathon.
The world’s first underwater Cabinet meeting of the Maldivian Government that was held recently was also organised by Divers Association Maldives.
